Bacterial vaginosis is an overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria causing malodorous discharge and irritation. It is not an STD and is not transmitted between sexual partners. Bacterial vaginosis can affect any woman regardless of sexual activity but certain behaviors such as douching or multiple sexual partners can upset the normal bacterial balance in the vagina and predispose women to bacterial vaginosis. Treatment is with antibioticsv such as, metronidazole or clindamycin either orally or intravaginally.
